Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (lim-FAN-je-o-LI-o-MI-o-ma-TO-sis) is a rare lung disease that typically strikes women during the prime of their lives. Known as LAM for short, this disease is characterized by an abnormal growth of smooth muscle cells, especially in the lungs, lymphatic system and kidneys. Unregulated growth of these cells can lead to loss of lung function, accumulation of lymph rich-fluid in the chest and abdomen and growth of tumors in the kidneys. It is estimated that for every million women, three to five will have LAM. Although great strides have been made in researching the disease, there is no cure for LAM.

This fundraiser I am organizing is near and dear to me. My 28-year-old daughter, Shea, was diagnosed in September of 2018 with LAM – only two short months after her wedding. Shea grew up in Maine and was a runner throughout her high school years for cross-country, indoor and outdoor track teams. Her love of running continued during her college years for both her personal fitness and as a participant for various fundraisers. Being dealt the hand of having a progressive, rare, incurable lung disease is the last thing any of us imagined for her.
As a mom, there is an innate desire to “fix” things and “make everything alright.” It has been a struggle for me since I have no control over ridding my daughter of this disease. I had an uncontrollable urge to do SOMETHING, which is why I am organizing this family-friendly event while raising funds for The LAM Foundation. I have been a group fitness instructor and personal trainer at Women’s Fitness Studio & Spa since 1992. What better place or better way to help fundraise for The LAM Foundation in honor of my daughter and all women with LAM than with a 5K hosted by my women’s gym for a disease affecting women? It is with an enthusiastic heart that I ask for your sponsorship of this worthy cause. Together, we can help The LAM Foundation’s continued research to find a cure.
